A Post From Mum: Whitney

Finally, I have gained the controls of the computer from a certain doxie puppy. I just wanted to let everyone know that we are a home of three dachshunds though a certain puppy believes the blog is just about her. I did not think Puddles would take over the blog and leave the others out. So, I want to take this opportunity to let you all get to know a little more about Whitney. You may already know some things but just bear with me while I go through it again for our new readers.

As some of you may know Whitney is a retired breeding dog from a local breeder (who shall remain nameless). Unfortunately, due to my ignorance of breeding dogs, I was not aware of the issues she possessed or the challenges we would be faced with. But, I had to give her a home because of a couple of reasons. The first reason was because of her age. I didn’t think she would be high on someone’s list to bring home because she was already seven years old. And the other reason was because she is Albert’s sister. Even though they can’t stand each other, I felt like I owed it to both of them to bring a small portion of their family back together.

The first week home it was almost unbearable to stay in the same room with Whitney because her breath was so horrible. On Friday she went to the vet and underwent an extensive dental cleaning and ended up losing six teeth. Then the very next week we discovered a growth on her stomach. Come to find out it was a mammary tumor. That was due to the fact she was spayed too late. She went in for surgery to have it removed and it did come back benign. So she was already off to a rough start in her new home.

When Whitney came to us she didn't know her name, she didn't know how to go up and down stairs, she didn't know how to play...it was heartbreaking to say the least. She has plenty of other issues. She is extremely skiddish at any type of noise. She freaks out when you turn on the kitchen faucet or flush the toilet. She even walks around for hours at a time. The only time she can relax is when she is right beside me. And Whitney is by no means a lapdog, she will let me pet her but that is as far as it goes. Though we do have a strong bond she doesn’t like people too much or even dogs.

Whitney may not be an acceptable pet in most households but we love her despite her issues and she is ours now and we will do what it takes to make her happy and healthy. Right now, she has severe seperation anxiety but we are doing what we can. It's been a journey to say the least , but the first time she crawled into my lap and licked my face I literally cried. It was great experience and showed her progress. And when I watch her run through the yard at breakneck speed I get goose bumps and think “this is how it is suppose to be”

Oh...Whitney is so very pretty! And you know what I think? I think she's awfully lucky to have found her Most Perfect Home That Ever Was with you! There's sure a whole lotta peoples who wouldn't have the patiences or luvs for a dog with Whitney's...um...baggage. So me and my mom think you're pretty special for letting her come lives with you.

Oh, and my mom says that she knows there's nothing like watching a skeered dog becoming, well, a dog!

We agree with Frankie. Whitney has been reborn. She now gets to live out her life as a real dog, not a cash crop.
She has a great family now.

Whitney is just beautiful! I'm glad she wound up in a place that can love her for who she is.

We had a greyhound, Hawk, who was just a nervous, spooky kind of guy. I don't believe that he was mishandled or abused as a racer before we had him. Some bloodlines just produce nervous, spooky dogs. Where everything with Treat was so easy, everything with Hawk was a struggle. But, I loved him deeply because he came so far. I can still remember the first time he laid down beside me on the floor and wanted to be petted as he dozed off. It was a BIG MOMENT in his life, and ours. I thought that I was teaching him how to be a good pet, but the truth was, he spent a lot of time teaching me how to be a better person. I learned a lot of patience, perseverance and understanding from him.

She wouldn't even come near me at first, but I even got a lick a while back. She's making progress - and I bet she continues to improve!! You have given her a fresh start!
Okay, I'm being hissed at...better get off here!

I have 3 words for you Allson, GOD BLESS YOU.

Whitney is beautiful and in time she will come out of her shell. I fostered a little girl once that was locked in a closet most of the time and it took her almost 3 months before she would let anybody touch her but after that she opened up to everybody but always stayed by my side. I would have adopted her but she and Mona didn't get along and I was afraid gthey would really hurt each other.

Bless you for giving the beautiful Whitney such a wonderful home!!!

Our mama is a doxie lover, having had several before apartment life and arthritis set in....they were all the long-haired variety. She brought a pair of them back from Germany in 1976.

Mama no longer has any puppies, as she has no yard for them and she has difficulty getting around, so it is much easier for her to have just us boys....(kitties)

We will be back!!!!!!!! :)

You get extra big props for what you are doing. My mom adopted my brother Lucky when he was 11. He weighed 121lbs when she got him, he'd been in rescue for 2 years, crated a bunch. He couldn't get in the car by himself cuz his back legs were weak, couldn't walk a quarter mile without getting tired. A year and half later he's getting younger every day. He can jump in the car, go for walks, he comes to daycare with us once a week.

Every dog deserves, as Mayzie says, The Most Perfect Home That Ever Was!

Whitney I hope you read this comment. I too was a breeder release dog although I was released when I was 3...but our stories are so similar. I didn't know any commands, my name, or what living in a house was all about. We both got lucky and found grand homes....If I can over come it so can you. Its ruff....Just remember there are good hoomans.

Who knew there was a dog exactly like me.

I was so curious about Whitney, who I was getting to know through your comments mainly until this post. I knew about her tumors and a bit of an aggression issue, and now I get it all. I hope we get as lucky as she was about her medical issues and thank you for stopping by to encourage us.
